What you are practising here

A word problem tests two things at once: whether the child can choose the operation, and whether they can carry it out. On a problem like “Zoe packs 3 crayons into each bag and fills 4 bags. How many crayons in all?”, the arithmetic behind 12 is usually the easy part.

Answers should carry their units. A number without a unit is not an answer to a word problem, however correct the arithmetic.

Because the names, objects and numbers regenerate, the child cannot recognise a problem type by its wording alone.

These problems use products under 110, so the reading, not the arithmetic, is the challenge.

In US classrooms these multiplication word problems are commonly aligned with the problem-solving expectations for this grade, though the exact wording varies from state to state.

A worked example from this sheet

Try “Each row at the art room has 11 chairs. There are 4 rows. How many chairs?” together before letting the child start alone. The answer to “Each row at the art room has 11 chairs. There are 4 rows. How many chairs?” is 44, and talking through how it was reached takes about a minute and saves several minutes of guessing later in the sheet.

How many crayons in all?” out on paper rather than in your head the first few times, say each step aloud, and check the result against 12 on the key before moving on.

The three errors worth watching for

Using this sheet as a daily drill

  1. Re-print the same skill rather than the same sheet. Because the numbers change, a child who memorised that “Zoe packs 3 crayons into each bag and fills 4 bags. How many crayons in all?” gives 12 still has to actually calculate tomorrow.
  2. Stop the session at the time limit even if the sheet is unfinished, and note where the child got to. A half sheet done well is better data than a whole sheet rushed.
  3. Mark it together straight away while the working is still fresh, so a slip like the one behind “Each row at the art room has 11 chairs. There are 4 rows. How many chairs?” can be talked through instead of guessed at.
  4. Read the first two problems out loud together before starting the clock. It costs fifteen seconds and removes most of the 'I did not understand the question' errors.
  5. Do not raise the number of problems until the accuracy is steady. Going from 20 correct-but-slow problems to more problems only multiplies the same mistake.

About the answer key

Keys are produced by the same code that produces the questions, so a mismatch between question and answer is not possible on these sheets.

Answers appear next to their question numbers, so a wrong item like “Each row at the school library has 6 chairs. There are 7 rows. How many chairs?” can be found in the key in a second and re-worked while it is still fresh.
