Dividing by 2 Worksheets

The worksheet generator on this page produces dividing by 2 worksheets with real, freshly randomised numbers — 20 of them per sheet by default — plus the answer key a parent or teacher needs to mark it quickly. Two of the problems on the sheet as it stands are 14 ÷ 2 and 10 ÷ 2 — answers 7 and 5 — and a new set is one click away.

📄 DIVIDING BY 2 WORKSHEET — A NEW SHEET EVERY TIME YOU PRESS THE BUTTON
🎲 New set of problems

‘New set of problems’ opens the generator in its own tab. There you can change the problem count and turn the answer key on or off. ‘Print or save as PDF’ opens the print dialog — choose Save as PDF in the printer list to keep the file. The sheet fits US Letter and A4, and the answer key prints on its own page.

What this worksheet practises

Checking is easy and almost nobody does it: multiply the answer back. If 5 times the divisor does not return the original number, something is wrong.

The problems here use dividing multiples of 2 by 2. Where a remainder appears, the sheet writes it explicitly so the child has to state both parts of the answer.

Division is multiplication read backwards, and a child who is fluent with the tables sees 14 ÷ 2 and produces 7 directly. A child who is not fluent has to search, and the search is what makes division feel slow and unpleasant.

Division is the operation that most rewards times-table fluency. If this page is slow, the fastest route to improvement runs through the times table sheets rather than through more division.

In US classrooms these dividing by 2 worksheets are commonly aligned with the division expectations for this grade, though the exact wording varies from state to state.

These six come from the sheet loaded on this page. Press the button and the numbers change, but the shape stays the same (dividing multiples of 2 by 2).
#ProblemAnswerWhat to check
114 ÷ 2 =7Watch for: reversing the two numbers
210 ÷ 2 =5Check: dropping the remainder
320 ÷ 2 =10Look at: writing the remainder as a decimal by accident
42 ÷ 2 =1Ask about: searching the tables one by one
58 ÷ 2 =4Watch for: losing zeros in the quotient
616 ÷ 2 =8Check: guessing the quotient and not adjusting

A worked example from this sheet

Try 20 ÷ 2 together before letting the child start alone. The answer to 20 ÷ 2 is 10, and talking through how it was reached takes about a minute and saves several minutes of guessing later in the sheet.

Work 2 ÷ 2 out loud as a demonstration. It gives 1. Children who hear 2 ÷ 2 reasoned through once at the start of a session make noticeably fewer errors in the ten minutes that follow.

Where children usually slip up

Using this sheet as a daily drill

  1. Do not raise the number of problems until the accuracy is steady. Going from 20 correct-but-slow problems to more problems only multiplies the same mistake.
  2. Mark it together straight away while the working is still fresh, so a slip like the one behind 20 ÷ 2 can be talked through instead of guessed at.
  3. Write the finish time and the score at the top of every sheet. Two weeks of those two numbers tells you more about progress on dividing by 2 than any single test result.
  4. Use a pencil, not a pen. Children working on dividing by 2 rethink far more often when erasing is allowed, and you get to see exactly where the rethinking happened on an item like 20 ÷ 2.
  5. Stop the session at the time limit even if the sheet is unfinished, and note where the child got to. A half sheet done well is better data than a whole sheet rushed.

About the answer key

Because the numbers are random, there is no shared answer list to look up: the key printed behind your sheet is the only one that fits it, and it shows 7 for 14 ÷ 2.

The answer key is generated with the worksheet, not written by hand, so it always matches the sheet in front of you — 14 ÷ 2 is listed as 7, 10 ÷ 2 as 5, and so on down the page.

Printing on US Letter or A4

To save these dividing by 2 worksheets instead of printing them, choose 'Save as PDF' in the printer list. You get the worksheet and the answer key as a single PDF, on Letter or A4 depending on your printer settings.

Printing works the same on US Letter and A4, because the layout uses relative widths rather than fixed inches. Set margins to default and scaling to 100%, and all 20 problems fit.

Frequently asked questions

How many different sheets can I make?
As many as you want. The numbers are randomised each time, so printing five sheets in a row gives five different sets of 20 problems on the same skill.
Should remainders be written as R, as fractions or as decimals?
Follow the school's convention. This sheet uses the R form because it is the one used when division is first taught.
Are these worksheets really free?
Yes, completely. The page is supported by advertising, not by subscriptions, so there is no limit on how many dividing by 2 worksheets you print.
Why is division so much harder than multiplication?
Because it requires the same facts in reverse plus a decision about remainders. Children typically need two to three times as long per problem on dividing by 2 as on the matching multiplication.

One sheet of dividing by 2 worksheets a day for two weeks will tell you more about where a child working at this level actually stands than any single long assessment.
