One problem worked through

Try 21 ÷ 4 together before letting the child start alone. The answer to 21 ÷ 4 is 5 R 1, and talking through how it was reached takes about a minute and saves several minutes of guessing later in the sheet.

Three things that go wrong here

A 10-minute routine that works

  1. Mark it together straight away while the working is still fresh, so a slip like the one behind 21 ÷ 4 can be talked through instead of guessed at.
  2. Keep the session to about 10 minutes. A 4th grader who is still counting on fingers will need longer than that on a line like 75 ÷ 6, and that is fine: the timer is a measurement, never a punishment.
  3. If two days in a row come out under 10 minutes with everything correct, that is the signal to move up: either numbers bigger than 75 ÷ 6 uses, or the next skill in the sequence.
  4. Read the first two problems out loud together before starting the clock. It costs fifteen seconds and removes most of the 'I did not understand the question' errors.
  5. Stop the session at the time limit even if the sheet is unfinished, and note where the child got to. A half sheet done well is better data than a whole sheet rushed.
