One problem worked through

The item 12 × 7 is worth doing slowly. The answer to 12 × 7 is 84, and the route to it is the route every other problem on this sheet takes — which is why the sheet has 20 of them rather than one.

Take the first problem on the sheet as it stands, 12 × 1. Work 12 × 1 out on paper rather than in your head the first few times, say each step aloud, and check the result against 12 on the key before moving on.

Three mistakes we see most often

Getting the most out of 6 minutes a day

  1. Re-print the same skill rather than the same sheet. Because the numbers change, a child who memorised that 12 × 1 gives 12 still has to actually calculate tomorrow.
  2. Keep the session to about 6 minutes. A child working at this level who is still counting on fingers will need longer than that on a line like 12 × 1, and that is fine: the timer is a measurement, never a punishment.
  3. Stop the session at the time limit even if the sheet is unfinished, and note where the child got to. A half sheet done well is better data than a whole sheet rushed.
  4. If two days in a row come out under 6 minutes with everything correct, that is the signal to move up: either numbers bigger than 12 × 1 uses, or the next skill in the sequence.
  5. Run the sheet at the same time each day. Ten focused minutes before dinner beats an hour on Sunday, because the 12 times table is a recall skill: 12 × 1 has to arrive without being worked out, and recall is built by frequency.
