What this worksheet practises

Multiplying fractions is mechanically the easiest fraction operation — multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms — which is why 2/5 × 1/6 gives 1/15 in a single step with no common denominator anywhere.

This sheet uses proper fractions with denominators to 9 and answers are reduced, so simplification is part of every problem.

The difficulty is conceptual rather than procedural. The product of two proper fractions is smaller than either of them — 5/18 is smaller than both parts of 5/6 × 1/3 — and that contradicts everything multiplication has meant until now.

Start with one worked example

A good first problem to do together is 2/5 × 1/6, which comes out at 1/15. Do 2/5 × 1/6 once with the child narrating, then hand over the pencil and start the clock on the other 20 problems.

Here is one worked through. 5/6 × 1/3 gives 5/18. If your child arrives somewhere other than 5/18 on 5/6 × 1/3, look at the working rather than the answer: nearly every wrong result comes from a skipped step, not an unknown fact.

Three common mistakes and what to do about them

Getting the most out of 10 minutes a day

  1. Do not raise the number of problems until the accuracy is steady. Going from 20 correct-but-slow problems to more problems only multiplies the same mistake.
  2. Re-print the same skill rather than the same sheet. Because the numbers change, a child who memorised that 2/5 × 1/6 gives 1/15 still has to actually calculate tomorrow.
  3. Run the sheet at the same time each day. Ten focused minutes before dinner beats an hour on Sunday, because multiplying two fractions is a recall skill: 2/5 × 1/6 has to arrive without being worked out, and recall is built by frequency.

Frequently asked questions

How many different sheets can I make?
As many as you want. The numbers are randomised each time, so printing five sheets in a row gives five different sets of 20 problems on the same skill.
Why is the answer smaller than what I started with?
Because taking a fraction of something gives less than the whole of it. Half of a third is a sixth, and that is the entire idea in one example.
Can I change how many problems are on the page?
Yes — the generator takes 10, 20 or 30 problems. Twenty is the default because it fits one page and suits a 10-minute drill.
Do I need a common denominator?
No — that is only for addition and subtraction. Multiplying goes straight across, which is why this topic is usually the easiest of the four.
