What the sheet contains

An exponent is repeated multiplication written short. Reading √64 as a multiplication rather than as a symbol is what makes 8 obvious instead of mysterious.

Try one together first

Work √100 out loud as a demonstration. It gives 10. Children who hear √100 reasoned through once at the start of a session make noticeably fewer errors in the ten minutes that follow.

Here is one worked through. 8² gives 64. If your child arrives somewhere other than 64 on 8², look at the working rather than the answer: nearly every wrong result comes from a skipped step, not an unknown fact.

Where children usually slip up

A 12-minute routine that works

  1. Write the finish time and the score at the top of every sheet. Two weeks of those two numbers tells you more about progress on exponents than any single test result.
  2. Mark it together straight away while the working is still fresh, so a slip like the one behind 7^3 can be talked through instead of guessed at.
  3. If two days in a row come out under 12 minutes with everything correct, that is the signal to move up: either numbers bigger than √64 uses, or the next skill in the sequence.
  4. Stop the session at the time limit even if the sheet is unfinished, and note where the child got to. A half sheet done well is better data than a whole sheet rushed.
  5. Run the sheet at the same time each day. Ten focused minutes before dinner beats an hour on Sunday, because exponents is a recall skill: √64 has to arrive without being worked out, and recall is built by frequency.
