What this worksheet practises

Writing in a trailing zero so both numbers have the same number of decimal places is not required mathematically and helps enormously in practice.

This sheet uses two-place decimals up to 49.95, with two decimal places, which is the form children meet most often in money and measurement — 4.53 + 24.90 is a fair example of it.

This is where place-value understanding gets tested. To a child who really understands 8.2 × 6.3, the tenths column is not 'the first column after the point' — it is a place worth a tenth.

Adding decimals is column addition with one extra rule: the decimal points line up. Get that right and 2.15 + 2.94 is no harder than the whole-number version; get it wrong and the answer is not remotely 5.09.
