This page makes free printable 2nd grade times tables worksheets on demand: press the button and you get a new sheet of 20 problems with a matching answer key, ready for US Letter or A4 paper. Right now the generator is set to problems such as 5 × 5 (answer 25) and 5 × 4 (answer 20); press the button again and the numbers change while the skill stays the same.
‘New set of problems’ opens the generator in its own tab. There you can change the problem count and turn the answer key on or off. ‘Print or save as PDF’ opens the print dialog — choose Save as PDF in the printer list to keep the file. The sheet fits US Letter and A4, and the answer key prints on its own page.
Once a table is fluent forwards, the missing-number version turns it into division practice without the child noticing they have changed topic.
This sheet uses tables 2 through 9, and the order is randomised so the child cannot ride the rhythm of the count, and a typical line looks like 2 × 8.
A times table sheet has one job: to turn calculation into recall. When a child meets 5 × 5 they should produce 25 in under three seconds without computing anything, and this page measures exactly that.
Facts are best learned one table at a time and then mixed. A table practised in isolation feels mastered long before it is; the mixing is what makes it stick.
In US classrooms these 2nd grade times tables worksheets are commonly aligned with the multiplication fact fluency expectations for grade 3, though the exact wording varies from state to state.
| # | Problem | Answer | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 × 5 = | 25 | Watch for: chanting up to the answer |
| 2 | 5 × 4 = | 20 | Check: guessing the square |
| 3 | 4 × 2 = | 8 | Look at: fading in the second half of the sheet |
| 4 | 8 × 7 = | 56 | Ask about: losing the commutative pair |
| 5 | 2 × 8 = | 16 | Watch for: confusing neighbouring facts |
| 6 | 3 × 2 = | 6 | Check: skipping the ones and tens facts |
Here is one worked through. 5 × 4 gives 20. If your child arrives somewhere other than 20 on 5 × 4, look at the working rather than the answer: nearly every wrong result comes from a skipped step, not an unknown fact.
Work 8 × 7 out loud as a demonstration. It gives 56. Children who hear 8 × 7 reasoned through once at the start of a session make noticeably fewer errors in the ten minutes that follow.
Because the numbers are random, there is no shared answer list to look up: the key printed behind your sheet is the only one that fits it, and it shows 25 for 5 × 5.
Keys are produced by the same code that produces the questions, so a mismatch between question and answer is not possible on these sheets.
If the problems look cramped, drop the count from 20 to a smaller number before printing these 2nd grade times tables worksheets; the font stays the same size and the spacing opens up.
For a class set, print one sheet, press the new-worksheet button and print again. Each child gets different numbers on the same skill, so nobody can copy the answer to 5 × 5 from a neighbour.
Print a sheet of 2nd grade times tables worksheets, run it for 8 minutes, mark it together, and come back tomorrow for a different set of numbers on the same skill.
